In this segment of “Did You Know?”, Aquatic Biologist Kendall Bakich explains why it’s important to take some precautions when fishing for trout in the heat of the summer. Trout are especially vulnerable to die-offs and disease once water temperatures reach or exceed 70 degrees. Angling during these hot periods can make releasing fish nearly impossible and can lead to increased mortality.
Finding Cooler Waters
The summer heat is here, but there are still plenty of great fishing opportunities in Colorado. Use the Colorado Fishing Atlas to find new fishing adventures where water temperatures are cooler.
Summertime Drought Management
Water temperatures and stream flows can change during the summer months, creating adverse conditions for anglers, boaters, fish and other animals. Irrigation demands and restrictions on releasing water from lakes and reservoirs can also lead to low flows and high temperatures.
Lakes, ponds and streams can be temporarily closed to the public if water storage levels or stream flow drops below stable levels. A list of all low-water or other drought-related closures is available below.
