Remaining Colorado big game hunting licenses go on sale
August 6, 2024 at 9 a.m Mountain Time.
Hunters, mark your calendars, and don’t miss your shot! Big game hunting licenses remaining after the primary and secondary draws will go on sale soon and there are a lot of hunting opportunities still available.
Remaining licenses for 2024 have been placed on the leftover list and will become available for purchase on August 6 at 9 a.m Mountain Time. Mountain Time. Over-the-counter licenses for elk, bear, archery pronghorn, and whitetail deer will go on sale at the same time.
Licenses go on sale online, over the phone at 1-800-244-5613, and in-person at CPW offices and sales locations all at once. This is the first opportunity to get a limited big game hunting license outside of the draw process.
Licenses that will become available include:
- Limited licenses leftover after the primary and secondary draws for elk, deer, pronghorn and bear
- Limited elk, deer, pronghorn, and bear licenses that someone drew but surrendered or did not pay for during the secondary draw that took fewer than five resident preference points. NOTE: You could see a license that you applied for during the Primary or Secondary Draws on the list!
- Limited licenses that were returned for refund/preference point restoration since the opening of the secondary draw but prior to July 29 and took fewer than five resident preference points to draw. NOTE: You could see a license that you applied for during the Primary or Secondary Draws on the list!
- Over-the-counter (OTC) licenses for elk, archery pronghorn, whitetail deer, and bear
Preparing for sales day
CPW locations and sales agents will be very busy that morning, so try to get prepared ahead of time.
Log into the online system a few days prior to sales day to ensure your information, such as email and mailing address, is up-to-date. If you have any problems getting into your account, contact CPW ahead of time for assistance.
Have your hunt codes and credit/debit card number ready. Check the leftover list, write down all hunt codes you are interested in, and list them with your most coveted licenses first.
If you call the CPW sales line for your purchase, be prepared for extended wait times and have all of your information – including hunt codes – ready. The sales line representatives will not be able to look up hunt codes for you.
Inventory held in shopping cart
When you enter a hunt code and confirm it, that license is “held” for you in the cart for 15 minutes or until you process the transaction, whichever comes first. If the time is allowed to expire, another customer can hold/purchase that license.
Keep the inventory hold system in mind when attempting to purchase licenses from multiple species. Licenses are held in your cart for 15 minutes. Be sure to pay within that timeframe or licenses become available for someone else.
Queuing system
While products go on sale at 9 a.m., customers can log into their account as early as 8:00 a.m. Do not go further than the residency page until 9 a.m.
CPW’s licensing vendor Aspira utilizes a virtual queuing program, called Queue-It, to mitigate the load on the system. The queuing program will engage when the number of users on the system meets established thresholds. Once you’ve entered the queue, do not close your browser, or navigate away from the queue page or you will have to re-enter at the back of the queue.
Additional information
Know the “List” type for your license.

All big-game hunting licenses are either List A, B or C, as indicated in the hunt code tables in the Colorado Big Game Brochure (see example in the image above) or next to most of the OTC maps.
The List types exist so that you know if you can get more than one license for the same species:
- List A: You can only get ONE List A license = A
- List B: If a hunt is List B, you can get up to TWO licenses: one List A license and one List B license, or two List B licenses = A+B or B+B
- List C: If a hunt is List C, you can get ANY number of List C licenses, as well as one List A license and one List B license, or two List B licenses = A+B+C+C+C, etc. or B+B+C+C+C, etc.
Leftover Remaining License List Refresh Rate
Because the online leftover list updates every 5 – 10 minutes, a hunt code may still be listed as available, even if it is sold out.
Where to purchase
CPW strongly suggests hunters purchase their licenses online at cpwshop.com. CPW offices and sales locations use the same system as you do at home.
Head to cpwshop.com and log in to your account up to an hour before 9 a.m. on August 6 so you’re ready to purchase when the licenses go on sale. You can also call in and purchase at 1-800-244-5613, but know there will be long wait times.
More information on the leftover list and over-the-counter licenses is available on the CPW website.
A preview list of additional licenses will become available on August 13 as part of our reissue process. Reissue license sales will begin on August 14, 2024, at 11 a.m. MT.

It says that CPW shops use the same system as we will at home however that’s not accurate. At home users have to keep clicking I’m not a robot and click on a series of pictures as to where the sales office does not have to deal with that interruption.
Which gives people that go to CPW offices an unfair advantage. please correct me if I’m wrong. Thank you!
Thanks for your question, Bill. CPW offices tend to have long lines when remaining limited license sales open. The long lines of people impact the efficiency of license purchases, so in-person sales do not create an unfair advantage. If the customer volume is high you will be standing in a physical line at an office or waiting in Queue-It online. If you are at the front of either line you have a slightly better chance. Purchasing any of the small quantity license on August 6 will be extremely challenging as there will be many hunters competing for the same license. If you go to a CPW office, there is a good chance a low quantity license will be gone before you even get to the counter to speak to a sales person. There will be hunters who successfully purchase these high demand licenses. Hopefully your strategy gets you the license you are looking for. Best of luck!
