Each year, the Photography Issue inspires all of us at Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) as an opportunity to see the wonders of our state through the eyes of our photographers.

For hunters, photographers, biologists, wildlife watchers, etc., when it comes to deer in the fall, the talk always turns to the rut.

Since shrikes lack talons like those of raptors, they stun or kill their prey with rapid blows from their poweful, hawk-like beaks and they will kill vertebrates by biting through their necks.

The lark bunting epitomized the cheerful, positive, optimistic spirit of the state of Colorado and its citizens.

Colorado is home to one of the most abundant and diverse wildlife populations in the world. From deer and elk to bighorn sheep and moose, more than 960 species live in our great state. While this makes for an exciting opportunity to view and photograph
